Whether it’s play-by-play or anchoring, CBS 5 News weeknight sports anchor Gary Cruz has done it all.

He began his anchoring career in 1974 at KUSA-TV in Denver and was a sports anchor in Los Angeles for nine years.

Gary is also known for his radio work. He was a sports talk host at XTRA in Los Angeles and hosts his own show, the Positive Side of Sports, on ESPN Radio 860, KMVP.

Gary has also broadcast sports events. His play-by-play credits include California State Northridge football and basketball, as well as Colorado State University football.

He was also a color commentator for the Denver Broncos pre-season football as well as the Denver Gold of the USFL. While in Denver, Gary hosted the John Elway Show on KMGH-TV, and in Los Angeles was the host of the Lakers pre-game show on KCAL-TV.

Not content to cover sporting events just in this country, Gary has also traveled to Brazil, Tel Aviv, Moscow, Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan for play-by-play for Pay Per View.

Gary also finds time for the movies – not to see them, but to be in them. His acting credits include Independence Day, Wag the Dog, and Godzilla.

He’s also done commercial work for Nike, Snickers, Toyota and Worlds of Fun Amusement Park.

Gary also recorded audio book versions of Call of the Wild and Moby Dick.

During his career, Gary has won 2 Emmys for his sports reporting and show hosting as well as an IRIS Award for documentary work. He’s also been honored by the Associated Press for reporting, commentary and anchoring.

Since moving to the valley, Gary has joined the board of the Arizona Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Gary is married and has a college-aged son.
